RAS Joins with Philly Moon Men
June 14 Sky Watch in Columbus Square
Open to all interested.
Gates open 8:30 PM / First Telescope Views 9:00 PM
Bring your blankets, binoculars and lawn chairs! Join us for an evening sky watch out on the Square.
Amateur Astronomers from Rittenhouse Astronomical Society join with the Philly MOonmen. We will guide visitors to find asterisms (such as the Big Dipper!) of the early summer sky! Venus and Mars are on display early on and with good conditions we can see Venus as it passes above the Beehive Star Cluster (binoculars required.) Find the constellation Leo as it Marches to the West and the grand Herdsman Bootes high above. Find the brightest stars of the summer sky by their apparent color.
Telescope views will be provided by amateur astronomers. Bring your own gear for a personalized view.
Double stars are a-plenty. Two nearby open clusters of stars and the nearest star association are on display above, with a globular cluster or two (furthest objects out from galactic center) a possible catch! We hope to tease them out of the Philadelphia night sky.
For RAS members unable to attend, we will attempt to broadcast over Zoom from the Square at 9:00 PM. If the satellites align consider joining us virtually. Zoom Portal will open for an astroQuora session at 8:00 PM. (No agenda, member opporatunity to virtually mix.
