Mars Will Be At It's Closest!

Greetings RAS Members!

I just wanted to publish this quick reminder that tomorrow, Monday, December 24th, 2007, Mars will be at it's closest point until May of 2016!

If you have a chance, be sure to check this out as it will be a spectacular view. It will be the highest in the sky around 11PM and will be hovering right next to the moon - you cannot miss it!!

Please note, that if you had gotten the email regarding Mars will be as big and bright as the Moon, please disregard this. This is physically impossible, and will never happen!

So be sure to head on out Christmas Eve, and check out the great sight. As always, please send all observing reports to: observingreports@rigelastronomy.com so we can get them up on the student website for you!

For more information regarding special events like this each month, be sure to check out our monthly calendar on the student webpage at:

http://rittenhouseastronomicalsociety.org/Student/monthly_calendar/index.html

Good luck hunting down Mars high in the East sky by Gemini. Be sure to share this with your family and friends.

Happy Holidays!

September 26th, 2007: Dr. Robert Nemiroff

Fellow Members:
Just a quick reminder that our normal meeting has been changed for a special evening.

RITTENHOUSE ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY OPEN MEETING
SEPTEMBER 26, 2007 7:30 pm.
Franklin Institute

Dr. Robert Nemiroff of Astronomy Picture of the Day will be speaking to us about highlights from the web-site and his new book Astronomy / 365 Days. This meeting is open to the public and guests. Students are encouraged to attend.

At our upcoming meeting we will be conducting an anonymous survey from graduate students that are working with us from Philadelphia University. They will be identified by wearing name tags. The survey is for those interested in, or already volunteering to assist in the operation of the Bloom Observatory. This is a great opportunity to get involved in our program at this particular time. The results of the survey will help them develop training materials for those interested in the operation of the observatory telescopes.

If you would like an advance copy of the survey (it takes 3 minutes to complete) please reply to this e-mail, I will attempt to get a copy to you before the meeting. We will also have surveys available at the meeting.

Membership dues are also being accepting by Ruth List at the meeting for the 2007/2008 Academic year. A membership renewal form is attached for your convenience.

We look forward to your attendance at our first Fall gathering.

Take care,
--
Ted Williams
Rittenhouse Astronomical Soceity; Secretary
www.RittenhouseAstronomicalSociety.org
